Bio:
Evolution.
evolution (ev'?-lu'sh?n, e'v?-) pronunciation n.
1. A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually
more complex or better form.
This controversial word spawns heated discussion around many
circles, culling differing viewpoints from the many coins that are tossed
regarding the word itself. But semantics aside, the word "evolution" is
perhaps the most apt description for a band like A Dawn Within.
The seeds were planted in the minds of some Appleton area
musicians in 2002. Their goal to create a musical project that combined the
harshness of death metal with the lush sounds of the symphonic metal
movement which had been started to gain popularity in the underground metal
scene during the beginning of the new millennium. The vision's creators
spent most of their time deciding upon a sound until the recruitment of Mike
LeMoine. A talented and passionate guitarist, Mike started to drive the band
to create a sound akin to what he was enjoying playing and listening to.
This proved to be quite the contrast; Mike brought with him fast melodic
passages and frenetic playing, and the rest of the members exploring the
doomier elements of their writing.
The band in its infancy struggled as Mike further grew beyond
what some of his bandmates were able to match. A significant change to the
band was the addition of Jeremy Schmitt on drums, a person that shared the
same vision as Mike did in regard to trying to push the music to loftier
heights. The music got faster and more complex, and A Dawn Within was nearly
bursting at the seams under the weight of being a long time in the
conceptualization stage of the band, yet no recorded output for the band.
In May of 2005, A Dawn Within went into the studio to record
a three song demo, and it was during this time that the test of recording
almost destroyed the band. The female vocalist and other guitar player
immediately left, and the bass player/vocalist felt it would be unfair to
stick with one faction or the other, and amicably went his separate way
also.
This left A Dawn Within at a crossroads. Three-fifths of the
band were gone, and in the area most of the players into the style of music
are either committed to their own bands, not into the style of music
anymore, or are just starting out. Seeing an opportunity, Jeremy and Mike
had the idea of asking Terry Walsdorf to join A Dawn Within. Terry had
played with Jeremy for four years and Jeremy knew well about Terry's ability
to be a dynamic vocalist and an adaptable songwriter.
Within two practices as the newer version of A Dawn Within, a
few new songs were written. It was then that the combination of Mike, Terry,
and Jeremy that had cemented shut the loose ends. Each member fed off of
each other's creativity, and for the first time in all of their musical
lives they had started to sense creative fulfillment instead of settling for
the next best thing. The search was on to complete the lineup, and the
search ended with the discovery of Luke Edseth. Luke had been posting on a
common forum for fans and musicians in the Wisconsin Metal Scene. They
auditioned Luke and instantly realized the potential he had in being able to
match Mike's ability, along with his general attitude which fit in with the
rest of the band's.
Commitments to college along with great distances Mike and
Luke lived from Jeremy and Terry resulted in spans of months between writing
and rehearsing, but it was in this time that every member on his own
continued to try to drive himself to make A Dawn Within a powerful force.
Josh Munnik, a childhood friend of Mike who had played orchestral double
bass was asked to join. Even though Josh had no experience playing electric
bass, much less in a progressive death metal band, he quickly went to task
and completed the band.
Songs like "Praise Be the Gods of Slow Death" and "Evening's
Delight" materialized during the brief rehearsal periods before they played
their first show with the new lineup. The response by peers in the area was
overwhelming. No one expected what the band was going to sound like, and no
one believed it was the same band that had just a half dozen practices
before their first show. This gave A Dawn Within the confidence to go into
the studio in June of 2006 to re-record two of the songs from the 2005 demo
and record two of the songs the new lineup had created.
A Dawn Within will continue to grow as the members strive to
open up new avenues of creativity and musicianship.
