Interview With

questions answered by Eyal Levi
interview conducted by Mike

Well, my first question would have been inquiring about the meaning behind the name Daath, but that is in your bio (click here for their bio). How did the band discover the Tree Of Life philosophy and how do integrate it into your music?

Mike and I have been researching occult sciences and ancient philosophies for over 13 years now. We wrote music for this project long before we made it known to people and we noticed it was following a common theme. When we looked more closely we realized that we were describing the adverse sephirot of the Tree of Life. We like to let the music flow from deep within us and
then sort it out. Shoot first, ask questions later sort of approach. When you go into a writing mode and then emerge one year later with 35 unique pieces and the majority of them follow a common theme then I think you know you're onto something.

Do many of your fans seem to support/understand this philosophy?

Some do some don't. It's really a mixed bag. I imagine that the grand majority of them just like the music. Here and there we get fanmail from people that actually connect with what the music is about. The fact that those stand out to me must mean that it's rare.

What goes through your mind as you perform on stage?

There are 2 types of nights for me on stage

The first goes something like this:

Did he fuck up? I'm Hungry... that chick is hot... METAL!!!!!!!...better not fuck up this part... that dude is staring at my nuts.... better get that chick's number after the show... someone in this club is buying me Jager bombs.

The 2nd is along these lines:

I really couldn't tell you what's going through my mind because it's pure musical energy and expression.

Can you describe the messages that are presented in the lyrics on your album, "Futility"? What can we expect to find on your next album?

The next album entitled, "The Hinderers," will deal with the subject of obstacles in your path whether external or internal. It's about those who try to bring you down. My personal opinion is that people's biggest hinderer is often their own self. Futility had more to do with the first swirlings and awakenings. I think it's kind of Naive, but that's the point. If you want
detailed explanations on the individual songs go to www.daathmusic.com , go to our music page, and rollover the song titles. There's lots of info.

Any idea on when the next album will be released?

First half on next year, hopefully first quarter. A lot is going into this
one and we're in no rush.

I notice that most of your shows are played in Georgia. Are you planning on heading to other parts of the country anytime soon?

My goal is to hit the entire US with this, plus get us into European markets. Know anyone that can help us out?

What is your typical weekly schedule like (band practice, playing shows,
work?, other stuff)?

These days it's hit the gym 5 days a week and then balance my studio responsibilities with my Daath responsibilities. I'm always working on either Daath or someone else's project. I don't have time for anything else.  Occasionally I'll hang out with a chick or check out a movie, but I don't
have much room for that in my schedule. I did see "Team America" though.  Trey Parker and Matt Stone know what the fuck they're doing.

Judging by the uniqueness of some of your songs, Daath seems determined not to sound like everybody else. Can you describe Daath's musical style? How can a band make sure that they are original?

Our musical style comes out of our determination to be honest with ourselves. We're not trying to be different. This is just how the music comes out. Our style is a blend of extreme metal, electronica, orchestral, classic rock, and carnival music. We just call it Techno Death Metal, but we've been given so many titles that I don't think it even matters anymore.

How can a band make sure that they are original? well.... hmmmmm..... I don't think that everyone in music has the capacity to make original sounding music. That aside, I think that the key is to stay true to what you feel is an honest expression. If you are indeed unique then it logically fits that your expressions would be unique. There's no need to try. Just be honest.

How has the response to your music been so far (both live and in written reviews)?

Either stellar or terrible. More stellar than terrible though. Sad to say, but our best shows have been when we haven't played with extreme bands. The audience that is least receptive to us is the extreme metal audience. The industrial and more mainstream crowds are much more accepting. That's fine by me. There's more of them.

What kind of plans are in the near future for Daath?

Recording Recording Recording.
