Interview with SHELTER RED
December 2009

** Interview conducted by Darren
Questions answered by Austin Crook.

D: What pointed you towards music? Did you happen to have a friend that got you involved? Or did you happen to see a great show, supportive parents, schooling?

AC:I had always liked rock music, and so did my friends. I guess that’s what made me listen to rock music. As far as playing music, I met Stephan when we were 13, he already played guitar and had a band, and that made me want to play music.

D: What kind of music did you listen to in your youth?

AC: Early 90’s rap, Nirvana, Bush, Nada surf, primus.

D: What is it like being a two piece? How do you overcome the challenges that come with that live?

AC: Being a two piece has its benefits, for example planning a practice schedule, it’s so easy with just two people. It's also less voices, less egos, less arguing, all the things that make it hard to be in a 4 piece band are just not there. As far as live challenges go, technology takes care of that.

D: You call the state of Oregon home, Have you met any other great acts from your area? I know about Red Fang - they really kick some ass!

AC: Yes they do! There are a ton of good bands here: The

days the nights, Microtia, Prize Country, the Gentry, just to name a few.

D: Your musical genome structure is mind blowing - How do you come up with the riffs and Shelter Redcompositions? Do you have a recorder at home that you fill up with ideas and then you later sort through them - write on the spot, at practice or on tour?

AC: We have a recorder at home that we use to lay down ideas. Then we go through them and jumble them up and put songs together that way.

D: What artists are you listening to?

AC: Mastodon, The Life and Times, Shiner, Houston, Son Caballero, Tristeze, Failure, Far, Fiddle of Steel, Deftones, Quicksand, BARKMARKET.

D: I have yet to get a hold of your debut full-length "Masters of the Universe" - how does it compare to your latest, "Strike a Mortal Terror"?
