Kamchatka

Interview with KAMCHATKA
May 2008

ADRENALIN:  I have seen a lot of bands, and with a ton of opening acts.  Actually, before Myspace came along, that was the best way to find great new artists!   I was very surprised at the attention you received opening up the Clutch show (4/14/08, Madison, WI).  I have never seen a crowd react like that before!  How did that feel and what has the reaction been so far on this tour?

THOMAS: Well, never under-estimate the power of a rock/blues trio! (just kidding), well we were surprised by their audience.  We did not know if they where gonna like us or what to expect, but every show seemed to be a success - so what is to say..."Thank you Clutch and thank you everybody who made this tour be such a fine treat for us. We love you".

ADRENALIN:  Clutch has a distinct fan-base and has been around for a long time.  They are one of my personal favorite bands of all-time.  How did you get hooked up with them?

THOMAS: Well, Clutch and Opeth from Sweden were on the same tour (2005 Sounds of the Underground) and Per Wiberg (keyboardist in Opeth) and Jean Paul in Clutch started this jam session out on the parking lot just to play some other music than metal and hard rock, and right there a small seed was planted in their minds about maybe doing something together in the future. And so came 2007 - and Per Wiberg called me up (I have played with him in another band since1993) and asked me if i would be interested to join himself, Ulf Ivarsson and JP on a week long jam/recording session.  Of course I said yes! ...and after a week an album had been recorded, the group is called KING HOBO and the record is in the shelves as we speak. (ed. note.. and it is fucking AWESOME!)

The group had such a good time, and then later when Clutch came to Sweden for three shows they asked if Kamchatka would like to open for them, that worked out fine and the 2008 US tour was born.

ADRENALIN:  How has the tour been going so far with Clutch?

Thomas Andersson of KamnchatkaTHOMAS: The tour has been great! Good music, good food, nice people, many laughs... GOOD TIMES !!!

ADRENALIN:  How do you approach recording, do you rehearse and have everything as ready to go as much as possible?  Digital vs. analog?  Do you do a lot of live tracking?

THOMAS:  We rehearse intensively for about three to four weeks before recording, just to be able to do 90% of the songs live, straight on to our old tape recorder and after that we do vocals and some effects on the computer.  We like to combine old technology with new.

ADRENALIN:  Your guitar tone (live and studio) is absolutely fantastic!  Can you tell me a little bit about your setup (guitars and amps?)
