Please tell me how "Sofa King Killer" got its start? Is there a story behind the name?

We started as a three piece. It was Ryan, Brad, and I who jammed out in a basement in Copley, Ohio. Our influences were all over the place in the beginning, but once we started writing we became more focused on what we were trying to accomplish. Brad and I were brainstorming one day about what we should be named, and he came up with the Sofa King Killer. We all thought it was a bit witty and humorous. You can interpret it in three different fashions, Sofa King Killer - So Fucking Kill Her - So Fucking Killer - SFK is what I have spray painted on my cabinets.

I love the dynamics and attacks, how does the band approach the recording process?

We seem to approach the recording process different every time we attempt. This time, for our full length on Retribute, we have been experimenting with different tone and monitor.

What kind if instruments does the band "wreak havoc" on?

Brad plays on a 1967 Ludwig, 4-piece I believe. Paul is a peavey man. I am into Sunn and Fender. We try to go for loud, but SFK have played a few that have blown ear drums. It is best for us to play out of two half stacks.

Besides the obvious, who are some key influences that help shape SKK?

Paul and Brad listen to a lot of contemporary pop. I have been listening to a lot of Rock like the Stones "Exile on Main St". I guess whatever I get that kicks for a few bucks [on vinyl]. Ryan is always into weird shit.

How many gigs do you play per month? What kind of reaction do you get when you play to a new audience?

Sofa King has always been about playing local shows to friends and such. We just recently realized that playing out of Ohio is quite fun, so we went on tour for a month out west. We have played too many odd shows, some with mullets, some older some younger. We love them all, rock on baby!

Are you able to focus all attention on the band, or do you have crummy jobs that get in the way?

I think we all have shitty jobs, you and I, Ryan, Brad; Paul too. I hate work, I really do. But lately I have been able to focus a lot of attention on the band, and what its like to tour for a good time. There are really too many places to see. We, in turn, decided to get out for 'awhile to places we haven't been.

What do you all like to do for fun besides music?

Ryan is really into pit bulls - breeding. We had to pick up a baby [pit] on the way home from our Rochester date, it was very cute. I do freelance graphics for print, and web design. Paul is into science, and I think Brad is really gay.

At what point did you know that music is what the future was going to hold for you?

I didn't really notice that music was significant in my life until I started to piss people off. That is probably the only thing that drives me to be creative.

What was the last good show you saw?

Probably when -16- played at the Tree House of Horror in Athens, Ohio. If you want some Rock Action pictures, e-mail me!!

What are your opinions on today's music scene?

I really don't know because I don't listen to anything but rock n roll.

How about your view on internet file sharing?

Fuck the people who oppose.

New Metallica, yay or nay?

Never heard it. I really like "And Justice for All..." :}.

How has the music business treated you so far?

It’s been great.

What is the music scene like in Ohio?

We are from Northeastern Ohio, Akron. There are a good number of bands from this city that rock. The Party of Helicopters, Pankration, the Black Keys and Don Austin, the Tight Whips and Malpa, check them out...

How does someone go about getting a hold of your material?

All is through mail-order.

Any final thoughts, comments or bitches you would like to add?

No, but thanks for giving us the opportunity to speak. Very cool interview.
