Interview With

Q: HOW DID Y-LAB FORM? WHAT IS THE BAND’S CREATION STORY?

Gravy and Corey used to jam before in 1994 - 1995. By the time Greg got a bass, Corey had sold his drums so just Gravy and Greg jammed. Soon after, Corey got new drums and formed a band with another friend. After about a year, the vocalist left and we replaced him with Bert. Then Y-LAB was born. The evolution continues as we added Shawn (guitars) in winter of 2000.

ARE YOU GOING TO REVEAL THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME, Y-LAB?

YUP!

WHO ARE THE CURRENT MEMBERS OF Y-LAB?

Brett Switzky- vocals, Corey Williams- drums, Greg VanderVelden- bass, Chris Grasse- guitar, Shawn Williams- guitar

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE Y-LAB'S MUSIC?

Melodic Punk/Rock/Metal

WHAT OR WHO ARE THE INFLUENCES OF THE BAND?

Everything the five of us have ever heard ranging from: NOFX and LagWagon to Firehouse to even Morbid Angel

NOW THAT YOU HAVE RECENTLY ADDED A SECOND GUITARIST, HOW DO YOU THINK THAT WILL EFFECT THE SOUND AND STYLE OF YOUR MUSIC?

It really takes the pressure off of Greg and Gravy (Chris) to assume any type of a lead role. We can write and play solid tunes with Shawn adding the perfect touch.

IF YOU COULD OPEN UP FOR THE BAND OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD YOU OPEN UP FOR?

Duh, The Misfits.

WHERE DO YOU THINK Y-LAB WILL BE IN 5 YEARS? WHAT WILL CHANGE?

All five of us will be better musicians in five years. Our writing will get tons better overtime, also. Hopefully our level of success will change a great deal.

ANY MERCHANDISE OR CD’S AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED?

Soon, hopefully....

IF SOMEBODY WANTS TO GET A HOLD OF Y-LAB, HOW CAN THEY DO THAT?

Go to our website, www.ylab.iwarp.com .

WHAT IS YOUR VIEWPOINT ON THE MUSIC SCENE IN THE MADISON (WI) AREA?

Now that O’Cayz is gone, pretty dim. Since we don’t get airplay on the rock stations, the other venues are hesitant to book us unless we tag along with a more established act. O’Cayz Corral was always nice enough to give us a chance whenever we asked.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO MENTION (comments, weird story, jokes, advice, ect.)?

Nope, thanks for your time.
